FORWARD

This book could not possibly be tho work of one person. It is the result of the efforts of the Ordt,-r of Battle sub- Section of the Office of tht Theater Historian, Hq ETOUSA (Later USFliT), This sub- section was conceived early in 1945 and was authorized to conuaenoe work in ;:arc'h 1945 by Colonel S.L.A. iter shall, Theater Historian and operated under the general direction of Lt Col Hugh Mi Cole, Deputy Theater Historian.

All together some 33 persons worked directly on the research, compilation, and production of this work. Among these, certain per- sons rendereddoutstanding. and valuable service, witnout which the book would have never been completed. To C1/T/0 Meyer M. Cahn goes, credit for organizing the research projects and driving the produc- tion through to the conclusion* To T Sgt Russell M. Viets, Tec 3 Kenneth L. Kinser, Tec 3 Paul R? Idles t and Tec 5 Arthur A. Herman who directed the individual Research projects should go full credit for the complete compilation of the great wealth of detail. PREFACE

"Order of Battle of. the United States Army., World War II, Europ- ean Theater of Operations- -Divisions" was prepared in the Office of the Theater Historian, Headquarters, United States Forces European Theater, to make available an accurate digest of important facts concerning the sixty-one (61) divisions assigned to the European Theater.*

Presented in this volume are command and staff rosters, compos- ition of divisions, attachments and detachments, assignments and attach- ments to higher units, command post locations and pertinent statistics. With the exception of the lists of attachments and detachments which cover only the. period of combat, the material presented for each div- ision dates from, its arrival in the European Theater to the end of host- ilities on 9 May 1945. For units arriving from the North African Theater, the record begins on 15 Aug 19--4, the date of the invasion of Southern France. Units which arrived in the European Theater after 9 May 1945 are not dealt with in this volume.

The principal sources used were the, historical records submitted by the units involved, chiefly the "After Action Reports" and support- ing documents. The research procedure for each section of the manuscript differed, however;, and effort was made to use every document available in the files of the Historical Section. These are specifically cited in the explanatory notes below. In addition, as research on a division was completed as far as. existing records permitted, the draft manuscript was, wherever possible, submitted to the divi "ion for correction and approval. A file for each unit containing all «ork sheets and corre- spondence prepared in the course of the research has been retained and forwarded to the War Department for reference.

The project here presented was originally undertaken prior to VE Day at the same time that the research and preparation of a series of narrative monograph histories of the war was begun.

# Hot included are:

1, Period of service of 1st Armd Div and 34th Div in UK in 1942 while based there preparatory to invasion of North Africa.

2-, Period of service of 1st Div in UK in 1942 and in North Africa and Mediterranean areas in 1942-3.

3. All divisions in North Africa during the period 3 Nov 1942 (Invasion date in North Africa) to 3 Feb .1943 (when North Africa Thea- ter of Operations was established as an independent command separates from ETQUSA ) .

iv

The primary intent off 1 preparing an Order ;.:4f Battle then was present statistical raateri-.il in convenient outline'' and tabular form, for the guidance of those onga^ed in wore exhaustive research. It is fully recognized that a definitive order ff battle .... «it await the completion of research much more thorough than' was possible under the conditions laid dawn for this project, That is presented here is in' essence a •tabulation of each unit's mwi official record, cross checked against other units' official, records and: in most cases specifically approved by the unit is historical officer, 'No claim is made to' any nigher truth than^a' reproiiuction of the essentials of the- official record/ as accurate as circumstances permitted.- "

Although the cardinal consideration in the preparation of this work was accuracy, it is realised that many inaccuracies still exist in it. It was shaped up against a deadline; in only six months, in contrast to the order of battle ef "-forld- ' Jar I which, with 14 fev.er divisions and 59 percent fewer combat -. days, ms not completed until 12 'years after the end of hostilities. A' large part of the research work and recording of facts was of necessity performed by untrained French civilian personnel; the rate of turnover among thorn was high and it was never possible to supervise their work in detail. Because the job was undertaken during the. war and finished in the theater within a few months after cessation, of hostilities, records, especially of units rapidly redeployed or demobilized here, were not always avaij-v labie.

But perhaps the most discouraging source of inaccuracy was the conflicting evidence of various army documents themselves on the samei'facts . At one period of this study,- the historical section was in possession of three sets, of figures showing the arrival dates 0f divisions ontthe continent, Inch source would normally be considered a satisfactory one. Agreement nay sought on 165 facts,- but - found on only 75 » Yet all the sourpes* purported, to give, the same fact— the arrival date of division headquarters.

It was soon recognized that the more figures available the more disagreement was invited. By the same token, however j it was realized that no sin tie siouroe could bo accepted as valid. The only solution seemed to be to seek by the multiplication of sources some general agreement. This bvas usually found and then a specific choice was made from the source which critical evaluation showed most pro- bably, reliable.

Inaccuracy crept in e;guin in iiiteridl submitted by divisions directly to the Theatep historian without the check that might have been given in the proeaos of forwarding through command channels f direct cori'espon-.-.ence with the divisions furthermore was often dif- ficult and unsatisfactory, The division historian' »*<as frequently burdened with other duties as the Division Public delations Officer *r Information and E-euc at ion Officer or operational member of the G~2 Section.; when, redeployment had reached its peakNa, different historian might arjswer each request for inf ormation,

... -^r -Centrar lac nine iecords Unit, Hq ETOTJSA; Hq ,12th Army Group; - - Adjutant General of each , 'division.

' v '

For these and-'possib^y mother 'reasons information submitted by the. divisions was , often less -reliable .and . complete than could have b beeh^de sired, When- draft si we re sent- for review, they were sometimes returned without correction^'ev^n though "it was known that, inaccuracies existed. ..Sometimes , carelessly ., corrected ., information ,es caped ^detection until final ' editing; 5 it was /then too : late to resubmit the .data because the units were redeployed or inactivated, -

. Iriac curacies, developed \.±n the processing of , the material within the Order of .Battle .Section. As materials were" processed they were cop- ied many time's, 'often by typists who Were not'. thoroughly familiar with ; the problems involved. EVen though careful proofreadings were given, errors continued to be found. It is, evident that copyists' errors must also have 'been written into the records under, field conditions where meticulous checking ,?as impossible.

Finally the Imitations, on time : and: personnel- made .necessary a large dependence on the records of higher headquarters.' It was proved time and again, that on matters, of detail the testimony, of higher head- quarters'was unreliable both because, of their ..'remoteness from the- ev- . ent and because of the' time lag in the recording of information from subordinate units. Nevertheless any other procedure would have precluded the possibility of finishing this project in the .time allotted.

With all these provisos, it is probable that the. errors which . have, unavoidably slipped by the compilers' most careful scrutiny are not so serious as to vitiate the value of the book. It is hoped that the "work may still -serve its original purpose in providing an Ariadne's thread through, the labyrinth of -facts and chronology- .of the- military operations in the 'European. Theater, « . >.'

,_ ' . ', TITLE PAGES . . 1 \

Title, pages, consist . of nicknames, .significances, .of shoulder sleeve insignia, .and .motto's .of each division. The 'sources from,' which - this information was'-gathered were The . This, information, 'prepared as concisely and- uniformly as possible, is not meant to give a ' complete picture , of the background. and history of the divisions1 irisignias,. COMHAUB MD STAFF LISTS

•Command and. staff, lists were, originally compiled in the Histor* ical Section from the following sources j: ''Rosters of Keys Officers'', of divisions, corps and higher headquarters (submitted monthly by the Ad- jutant Genera'l of Hq ETOITSA to the War Department)) "After Action Reports" with supporting documents*; and' units histories.

These sources, however, proved incomplete) often lacking exact dates of assumption of command and, dates of promotion. Tentative lists were therefore sent to each division historian' for completion and cor*' recti on,:

The first date shown for each command and staff position is the dote 'the division headquarters arrived in the European Theater and does not necessarily indicate the date the officer assumed the position, nor does it show the date that particular officer arrived in the theater. As an example, Up j Gen Mwin Pi pnrker, Jr, assumed command of the 78th Infantry Division on 15 August 194g,. However., in this volume, the date- shown opposite his name is 26 October 1944 which is the date the 78th Infantry Division headquarters arrived in the .auroppan Theater. .

In the promotion of general, officers, there are usually two dates involved, the date of the promotion order, and the effective date of rank. Wherever possible, the date of promotion order has been used. However, where information, missing from the. records, was. supplied by the division through correspondence |,t was not always possible to control this factor. . ' "

The reason for selecting the date of the order rather than the effective date of rank was that it conforms . more nearly to the historic cal fact. For instance, on 6 February 1945, Special Order No. 32 Tfar Department, promoted Brig Gen W G' Denver,' Commanding General of the Qlfti Division to the rank ,of Major Ger^era^m with an effective date of rank of 5 January 1945, . In this volume^ the promotion is shown on the latter d?t date, because prior to 6 February 1945, General Weaver was actually a Brigadier General^ and all historical documents will . rgfer him as a Brigadier General, . /

* .''After Action Reports'', are prescribed by paragraph 10, Army Regular tion 345-105 ''Military Records f-r Historical Records and Histories of Organization, "dated 18 Hoy 1929 as amended. After every battle or en- gagement- with the enemy, reports were mp.de by commanders of regiments separate battalions or squaqrons, companies or detachments and by all , commanders of a higher grade. It was prescribed that such reports have annexed thereto the unit and staff journals," together with supporting documents, Hq STOtJSA directed that these reports be submitted monthly, Upon receipt in Hq ETGU$A, these reports were forwarded to the Historic cal Section for custody and use.

vii

Another reason for selecting .the date of order, or later date, is that in some cases, a general officer was reassigned and promoted, with an effective date of rank which goes back to the period of his former command, and, a date of order which applies to the command to which reassigned.^ Lt Geri . L T . Gerzrfr was relieved from command of the V .Corps and, assigned to. the 'coipmand of the; Fifteenth Army on 16 January 1945, On that date "he was . a' magor. general Several weeks later' he was, promote^, to .'the rani?, of . '^eutehant general* but the effective date of this rank was retro active" to the period when he was in command of V Corps. However, in no. period of his. actual command of V Corps was Gene- ral. G'.erow a,, lieutenant general.

ARRIVAL DAT.-5S IN THE ETO ON CONTINENT

Arrival dates in the European Theater and arrival dates on the continent were originally obtained from the files of Central Machine Records Unit, Hq ETOUSAj "After -lotion Reports"; Unit Histories; and files of AG Operations Division,' Hq,- "ETOUSA*

The dates derived, from these sources, however, were often in . conflict, All dates %-~re recorded on work sheets and sources of the information shown, These were checked against a list of arrival dates prepared, by Hq,- 12th Army Group, But the resultant discrepancies were so large that a special request was submitted to all divisions to fur- nish exact dates. In most cases the new dates supplied agreed with those in the ''After Action Reports'' and unit histories. As no further check could be made short of research beyond the scope of this work, these new figures were used. In the case of units which were demobi- lized or inactivated before they could be .contacted, the "After Action Report'* or unit history dates were selected.

The arrival of a division, usually extended over several days and sometimes several months.' Inclusive arrival dates, however, would' have, involved additional complications. It was 'decided therefore to record only the. date of arrival of the division headquarters. "When headquarters itself arrived over a period of two or more days, the one date selected is that on which the main echelon closed. No attempt has been made to record the arrival of advanced detachments, which usually .came to the European Theater four to six weeks before the main body.

Since the date shown is 'the arrival date of the main body of the division headquarters , there are oases where a division actually entered combat prior to its stated arrival on the continent'. For example, the three infantry regiments of the 42d Infantry Division were committed on 24 December 1944, although the division headquarters did not arrive until 18. January 1945,

AWARDS -AMP PRORATIONS '

Material on awards and decorations was furnished by the Awards Branch, .'"Adjutant General, Hq VSfffi* A 'monthly report was prepared by

that 'Awards Branch, based "Updn 'reports from 'lower units, and was for- warded to the 'War Department",'' 1'his.. '"JBhe figures of the' total' awards made by' divisions are sometimes unavoidably misleading, For units 'which were. still' 'in the theater' on 30 September 1S?45, this report shows awards 'given" only up to that .date.. For units which' departed 'from the theater; prior to 30' September,, no ', awards are shown after the date ''of departure, even though it is known' that -swards based upc ..i combat "operations in tnis theater wefe'subse-. quently given upon arrival of unit in the Zone of Interior . For exam- ple,, the '97th Inf Diy departed from the theater in. May 1945, It is known that awards were given in the US based upon,, European, combat ope- rations. Since, however, no report was/made to the European Theater,, this information is not in the'. monthly thetoter reports to the War De- partment and is not included in this volume , *

Many awards, especially Bronze Stars, were . reported to higher headquarters and incorporated 'in the War Department monthly report but were later rescinded by lower . unit orders. These rescissions, were ca.u-s . sed mostly by the transfer of personnel or the discovery that the award, had previously been granted. Because of the complexity of recording each rescission at higher headquarters, the AG .made no attempt to alter the original monthly figures. A small margin of error should therefore be figured in the totals shown for Bronze Stars.

Figures on Purple Heart awards were not used; since a large per- centage of awards, were made in hospitals, records of which were not cleared through divisions, complete data 'was not available,

Records of awards of Congressional Medals . of Honor and. Distin- guished Service Medals were obtained from The Adjutant General' s Office Machine Records. Branch, from a special report prepared on 28. November 1945. 'Beceuse of their late receipt, they are. not shown in the division sion sections, and are listed only in Table J of pert.. II,

ATTACHMENTS AND DETACHM^TS

The information' contained in this section was obtained partly through research by the Historical Section, and partly from lists sub- mitted by divisions. The following .sources, were used by Historical Section researchers! "After Action Reports"; G-3 periodic reports of' division and corps; regimental S-3 periodic reports; -field orders, ines* sages, sitrepsj letters of instructions and corps troop assignment lists,, li g ''•

Research w*s a long and difficult process, and in many cases, available records did not furnish information upon which to base a com- plete listing. Because of insufficient records, and lack of personnel to complete the. * v3earch on all 61 divisions in the time allotted, a

request was made to divisions to submit this information. Some divi- sions replied that they couxd not furnish lists of attachments and de- tachments from - available records.. Sometimes lists furnished by divi- ., sions were so inadequate that an entirely new list had to be, accompli- shed by Historical Section research.

The principal means of verifying attachments and detachments was the find agreement in record between the unit, attached or detached and the unit to which it was attached'. The volume of work, however, involved in the checking of each attachment in that manner would have precluded the completion of this tentative study_ within the time allot- ted. For this reason, only detachment and ..attachment of regiments, com- bat commands, cavalry, groups and organic divisional units were so chec- ked.

. Most discrepancies found were resolved by research of records available at the Historical Section. But since time did not permit the verification of all attachments or detachments lists ...submitted by divi- sions, it is to be assumed that certain inaccuracies exist for non- organic units of battalion strength .or smaller.

Because records were not available, no attempt was made to show attachments prior to a division' s entry into combat,, attachments shown which coincide with date unit entered combat may have been made prior, to da te.. shown. .' . . ; -

All cavalry, units listed .in this study are mechanized .

When attachmentsor detachment dates were not available, the item was left blank.

' ' ' ASSIGNMENT MB ATTACHMENT TO HIGHER UNIT

Assignments and attachments to higher units were originally prepared from troop •assignmenttlists and ''After Action Reports'1 of armies corps, and divisions, in addition to card files maintained by AG Opera- tions Division, Hq ETOUSA* The prepared lists were then submitted to each division for correction and completion. Upon receipt of corrections from divisions, lists were again checked with originals compiled by the Historical Section.

Because certain records in the historical section were avai- lable corroboration of attachments and assignments, the corrections made by the division were not accepted without further checking. Tflaere the division agreed with statements of attachment and assignmsarttin the oriri ginal historical section report, no further study was made. Assignments were often made verbally, but recorded later' under e different date in accordance with a written order.. If records of verbal orders were found in research, the date of the verbal order was used in this report.

xi

COMMAND POST LISTS

The initial CP lists were prepared from the following sources: 12th Army Group'! G-3 (daily) Reports"; "After Action 'Reports"; Unit His- tories "(of which Only' six were available); SHAEF" G-3 War Room Daily Summaries* jand ' "Roster of Key 'officers", ■'publiehed* monthly" by Hq ETOUSA.

' One of the primary difficulties involved in preparing the list of ©bmmernd posts was the inconsistency of the records in the method of locating them, SHAEF G-3 Summaries listed them only by map grid coori- dinutes. Most other sources indicated' CP locations' by towns. Twelfth Army Group Ch$ Reports listed grid coordinates for division CPs, and indicated higher headquarters CPs on the map accompanying the report. Units themselves generally referred to their CP locations by relation to the nearest town, In this volume, the latter method for indicating all division CPs was ado. ted » '

The errors involved in handling and translating coordinates were large, as was expected , The tentative lists prepared by the Historical Section were sent to divisions for check, In most cases divisions sub>* mitted entirely new lists* different both in place names and dates, in addition to revealing important omissions, In view of this, only divls sion approved lists' were incorporated in this volume,

Even the corrected CP lists submitted by the divisions, however were inaccurate^ especially with regard to correct spelling of towns, and additional checking was necessary before they could be published.. It Was obvious that many had been carelessly prepared. Cities. shown were often spelled by American phonetics without regard to the French original.

Few divisions named the departments or province of the cities listed. The task of identifying cities by departments and provinces was completed in the Historical Section, Those cities which were ob- viously misspelled were corrected by. a careful study of the division' s route of advance. Some of this had to be informed guesswork, and some errors may therefore remain.

The problem of determining the correct geographical subdivision, made necessary by the multiplication of the same place name in a single country, was further complicated by the fact that many French cities have compound names but are generally referred to in their own locality by the first name only. When divisions neglected to give the complete name of the city , there was sometimes a possibility of locating it in the wrong department, The most difficult case was St, Aubin. France., There are sixteen (16) cities nomed St, Aubin, plus sixtyone (61) with names including St» Aubin, like St, Aubin Celleville^ St Aubin de Cretor, and St. Aubin sur Yonno.

The towns on the French border in the departments of Moselle, Bas-rRhin, and Haut-rRhin were sometimes given in German form and some-

times in French. This presented another problem in identifying the cities with the proper department*

; "In order to : Identify' towns,- without ambiguity," the counties were named -.for citi.es. in the United, Kingdom; provinces for cities in the Netherlands, , B elgium,"AuStria ;.and Czechoslovakia"; Depart- ments for French cities; and administrative divisions were shown for German towns. The 'Grand Luchy Of . Luxembourg has no' political subdivisions, equivalent in size to. provinces or counties*

In Germany, where ..older geographical divisions were ovei~- . laid by "ijiazi, party 'administrative divisions, ~the nomenclature as - established by the Third Reich ."was . used.

In cases where the Anglicized . spelling of foreign cities or political subdivisions is more easily. recognized by the general reader than is the foreign spelling, the Anglicized vers- ion has been used. For. example, .''iAjnich'* has been , used i-n place ■of "iaunchen" and ^Bavaria*1 in place of "Bayern". ^'Otherwise the spelling used is that recognized by the country- involved,

. . i It will be noted that the date shown for the initial Com- mand fpst Location doss not usually agree with. the date shown for the arrival of the division in the theater or the first date

...shown for. each Gouvfuand and. Staff officer, j^w^-may bef explained by the fact that some division^ reported --CPs- which were set up

.in advance of the arrival of .the main body of division 'headquart-

..ersj whereas., other divisions: did not report a <3P 'until the main

- body hod actually arrived at the initial CP. .:
